يزخر الكتاب بحقائق تاريخية وصورٍ ووثائق معاصرة. كما يستنطق نصوص أدباء غربيين زاروا بغداد وتركوا وراءهم انطباعاتهم. ويرسم صورة غنيَّة الملامح لبغداد منذ تأسيسها في العام 762، مروراً بحكم الخليفة الأسطوري هارون الرشيد، حتى خرابها على أيدي المغول. كما ويروي قصصاً عديدة عن بغداد الحاضر من ذاكرة نجم والي، عن حبه الأول، عن دخوله الحياة الأدبية، مروراً بسجنه في أقبية مديرية الاستخبارات العسكرية، وحتى هروبه إلى المنفى بعد أسابيع قليلة من اندلاع الحرب العراقية الإيرانية.
الكتاب هو وثيقة مهمة توضع فيها النظرة الغربية لصورة بغداد بمواجهة النظرة الشرقية، لكي لا نقول أنه درس في علم النظرة يلائم بين الطوبوغرافية والذاكرة الذاتية.

Najm Wali Najm Wali (Building 1956) left Iraq in the late 1980's. He studied German literature at the University of Hamburg and Spanish literature at the Completense University - Madrid. Among his published books: “The War in the Tarab Quarter (a novel, first edition, Dar Sahara Damascus Budapest 1993, second edition, the Arab Institute for Studies and Publishing Amman Beirut 2013), “Mary’s Last Night” (stories, Sharqiyat Cairo 1995), “a place named Kumayt” (a novel, Sharqiyat Cairo 1997), “A Waltz with Matilda” (Stories, Dar Al-Mada, Damascus 1999) “Tal Lahm” (a novel, first edition, Dar Al-Saqi Beirut London 2001, second edition Merit Cairo 2005). “Youssef’s Picture” (A novel, first edition, Arab Cultural Center House, Beirut - Casablanca, 2005, second edition, Merritt Cairo 2008). “Angels of the South” (a novel, first edition, Dar Kalim Dubai 2009, second edition, Dar Al-Mada 2010, Baghdad) , "Baghdad...Malborough, a novel for Bradley Manning" (a novel, the Arab Institute for Studies and Publishing Amman and Beirut 2012), as quoted from the Spanish play "A stinging speech against a seated man" by Gabriel García Márquez (play, first edition, Abu Dhabi Cultural Center 1998, second edition, Azma Publishing House, Amman 1999), as for the German, “Steps, Shadows, Days and Borders” was transferred by Michael Krueger (Selected Poems, Gaon Publishing House, Beirut, New York 2013). It has been translated into several international languages and published by reputable international publishing houses, and the most famous international newspapers have written about it. Najm Wali, who is considered today one of the most world-renowned Arab and Iraqi writers, writes columns in the Arab press (Life, Future and Range) and German (Die Zeit, Der Spiegel, Süddeutsche Zeitung and Neue Zürcher Zeitung). .
