Book Description
Designed specifically for biology and life/social sciences majors, this applied calculus program motivates students while fostering understanding and mastery. The authors emphasize integrated and engaging applications that show students the real-world relevance of topics and concepts. Several pedagogical features—from algebra review to study tips—provide extra guidance and practice.
Applied Calculus for the Life and Social Sciences features current, relevant examples drawn from government sources, industry, recent events, and other disciplines that appeal to diverse interests. In addition, the program offers a strong support package—including CL MATHSpace Instructor/Student websites and course management tools, instructional DVDs, and solutions manuals—that allows students to review the material independently and retain key concepts.
Features
• CL MATHSpace encompasses the interactive online products and services integrated with Cengage Learning mathematics programs. Ready-to-use content can be accessed through text-specific Student and Instructor Websites and via course management systems. For optimal instruction and learning, CL MATHSpace Homework Powered by WebAssign allows instructors to create assignments from a database of algorithmic questions based on end-of-section exercises.
• Make a Decision multi-step exercises reinforce students' problem-solving skills by taking real-life applications further, testing what students know about a given problem and prompting them to make decisions within the context of that problem.
• Non-computational Concept Check questions appear at the end of each section, allowing students to pause and check their understanding of the concepts covered in that section.
• Appearing in the middle of each chapter, Mid-Chapter Quizzes are single-page tests that let students practice skills and concepts learned in the chapter. This opportunity for self-assessment helps uncover potential weaknesses that might require further review of the material.
• At the beginning of each exercise set, Skills Review exercises help students practice those skills covered in previous sections; answers are provided at the back of the text to reinforce understanding.
• Exercise Sets offer opportunities for practice and review. In order to build confidence and increase understanding, the exercises progress from skill-development problems to more challenging, real-world applications.
• A wide variety of relevant examples—each of which is titled for easy reference—include solutions presented graphically, analytically, and/or numerically to provide further insight into mathematical concepts. Examples that illustrate real-life situations are identified with an icon.
Ron Larson
Ron Larson received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Colorado in 1970. At that time, he accepted a position with Penn State University in Erie, Pennsylvania, and currently holds the rank of professor of mathematics at the university. Ron is the lead author for over forty mathematics textbooks from 6th grade through calculus. Many of his texts, such as the 9th edition of is calculus text, are leaders in their markets.
Ron Larson is one of the pioneers in the use of multimedia to enhance the learning of mathematics. He has authored multimedia programs that range from 1st grade through calculus. To help with the development of his textbooks and multimedia programs, Ron founded Larson Texts, Inc., which with its publishing wing, Big Ideas Learning, employs about 60 people. Ron's most recent new textbook series is called "Big Ideas Math". It is the first middle school mathematics series to adhere to the NCTM's new "Focal Points Curriculum".
