Book Description
In the first installment of The Journey to the West series, Anthony C. Yu presents an enthralling translation of one of China's most celebrated literary classics. Drawing from his profound expertise in literature and religion, Yu masterfully brings to life the epic tale of the Monkey King, Sun Wukong, and his legendary journey to India to obtain sacred Buddhist scriptures.
Part One introduces readers to the mischievous yet powerful Monkey King, whose desire for immortality leads him to rebel against the heavenly realms. Upon his eventual capture, he is given the opportunity to redeem himself by accompanying the monk Xuanzang on a perilous pilgrimage. Together with their loyal companions, the pig-headed Zhu Bajie and the river demon Sha Wujing, they face countless trials and encounter formidable adversaries on their quest.
Through Yu's impeccable translation, the captivating narrative of The Journey to the West emerges in full splendor, offering readers a window into ancient Chinese folklore, mythology, and philosophy. Part One lays the foundation for an epic adventure that will challenge the protagonists' virtues, test their resolve, and reveal profound insights into the human condition.
