The Horror at Red Hook

"The Terror at Red Hook" is a short story by H.B. Lovecraft. The story begins with Detective Malone describing an incident while on duty in Red Hook, Brooklyn, which gave him a phobia of large buildings. Tracking back to where it all began, Red Hook is detailed, with his gangs and crimes, and proposes in a mysterious belly. Then the "Robert Swedam case" was said to be the driving force behind the involvement of Federally Ordered Malone in Red Hook. Swidam's behavior suddenly changed. Known as a shabby secluded, he is seen all over the city looking younger and brighter. News arrives of his engagement to a well-to-do woman, while at the same time, there is an increase in domestic kidnappings. A police raid, in which Malone was involved, revealed nothing useful from Red Hook's apartment on Swedam except for some strange inscriptions. After Swedam's wedding, he and his bride left on a ship. A scream was heard and when the crew entered Swedam's stately room, they found him and his wife dead, with traces of claws on his wife's body. Malone enters Suydam's apartment to see what he can find. In the basement, he comes through a door that opens and sucks him in, revealing a hellish landscape. Malone is found in the basement of Swidam's apartment, which has inexplicably collapsed above it, killing everyone inside. The tunnels and chambers revealed in raids are being tamped down and cemented, though as Malone tells, the Red Hook never changes.
